Flu epidemic in Latvia claims 12 more lives in past week

The intensity of the flu epidemic continued to increase during the past week, claiming the lives of 12 more people, according to data from the Center for Disease Prevention and Control writes LETA/BNS. 


Altogether, 37 people have died of flu since the beginning of the flue season. The average age of the flu victims is 65 and they all suffered from chronic illnesses. While the vaccination status of five flu victims remained unknown, the other 31 patients had not been vaccinated.


During the previous epidemic, flu killed 91 people, and a year before 75 people succumbed to the seasonal infection.


Last week, the flu rate rose to 363 cases per 100,000 residents, up from 362.1 cases per 100,000 residents
