Sandis Ozolins joins coaching staff of Nizhny Novgorod Torpedo

The legendary Latvian defenseman Sandis Ozolins has joined the coaching staff of Russian ice hockey club Nizhny Novgorod Torpedo, informed LETA/BNS. 


The 46-year-old Ozolins has become an assistant to the club's head coach David Nemirovsky, and will work with the club's defensemen.


As reported, Ozolins was appointed the head coach of Latvian ice hockey club Riga Dinamo ahead of the 2017/2018 season, but stepped down after a poor start to the season.


Ozolins retired after the 2013/2014 season when he was the captain of Dinamo and when the Riga club last qualified for the KHL playoffs.


Ozolins had been playing in the KHL since 2009, when he moved back to Europe after concluding his NHL career.


Ozolins was the 30th selection by the San Jose Sharks in the 1991 NHL Draft.


In his 15-year NHL career, Ozolins won the Stanley Cup once - in 1996 with the Colorado Avalanche. Ozolins has also participated in seven NHL All-Star Games.


Ozolins has played in a total of 1,012 NHL games in his career, during which he scored 190 goals and made 464 assists.
