Fire in Adazi military training ground extinguished

BC, Riga, 15.06.2018.Print version

The fire that had broken out in the Adazi military training ground near Riga last weekend was finally extinguished on Thursday night, Zigmunds Jaunkikis, a representative of the State Forest Service, told LETA today.

The State Forest Service has done its job and the affected territory has been returned under its owner’s supervision.

Jaunkikis informed that the fire in Adazi was put out at around 7:30 p.m. on Thursday after personnel from the State Forest Service and the State Fire and Rescue Service had worked hard throughout the daThe blaze had spread to a 770 hectares large territory covered with forests.

It will take some time to estimate the environmental damage from the fire. “The loss of the young forest can be determined quite quickly but the damage done to the old-growth forest cannot be estimated at once. Old trees do not die instantly, it can happen over a two to three months’ period after the fire,” Jaunkikis said, adding that the affected trees will have to be monitored as they recover after the blaze.

The representative of the State Forest Service admitted that the exact cause of the Adazi fire still has not been established but that arson can be ruled out in this case as the military training ground is a closed territory.

As reported, the fire in the Adazi military training ground broke out last Sunday, June 10.

With its more than 13,000 hectares, Adazi Training Area is one of the largest military training grounds in the Baltic states.
