Latvia's Alona Ostapenko has moved up one spot in the WTA tennis rankings to fifth place in the world - tying her best ever ranking, informs LETA.

Ostapenko advanced to the quarterfinals of the Rome WTA Premier series tennis tournament last week.

She will begin her participation in the French Open Grand Slam tennis tournament this week, which she triumphed in last year. If she fails to triumph again in the tournament, Ostapenko is expected to fall several places in the next rankings, as she will have failed to defend her points from last year's tournament.

Meanwhile, Latvia's second-best ranked lady tennis player Anastasija Sevastova has stayed put in the latest WTA rankings at 20th place. She too will be competing in the French Open.

Diana Marcinkevica is the only other Latvian in the top 300 - she is currently ranked 279th in the world.
