A Latvian customs canine handler and his dog Gary have won an international competition for trained dogs in Ukraine, the Latvian State Revenue Service said, cites LETA.

Senior customs expert Modris Nartiss and his dog Gary won the individual discipline for the detection of tobacco products in the Ukraine 2018 competition organized by the Ukrainian Regional Dog Training Centre of the World Customs Organization.

Customs canine handlers from Austria, Georgia, Moldova, Poland, Belarus, Bulgaria, Slovakia and Ukraine took part in the competition in three categories – detection of drugs, detection of tobacco products and detection of firearms and ammunition.

In the detection of drugs, another Latvian customs officer - Uldis Blumbergs - and his dog Tina finished in the 8th place.

This is the third time this year when Latvian customs canine handlers have done well in international competitions. Rihards Fjodorovs and dog Mirko were placed second at an international tobacco detection competition in Moldova in early May, and the team of the Latvian State Revenue Service canine handlers won the first place in the overall standings and also in several individual disciplines at an international competition held in Rezekne, eastern Latvia, in late April.
