Mayors of Riga, Tallinn take part in celebration of Tallinn Day

Mayor of Riga Nils Usakovs and Mayor of Vilnius Remigijus Simasius are among the dignitaries taking part in the events on Tuesday to mark Tallinn Day, the anniversary of the granting of the Lubeck city rights to Tallinn in 1248, informs LETA.


The celebrations were kicked off by a symbolic meeting of Estonian Prime Minister Juri Ratas and Tallinn Mayor Taavi Aas at the gate of Luhike Jalg Street connecting Toompea Hill, traditionally the seat of the body governing Estonia, and the lower town.


The ceremony of opening of the medieval gate was attended also by Mayor of Riga Nils Usakovs and Mayor of Vilnius Remigijus Simasius, spokespeople for the city government said.


Following the ceremony, the prime minister and the mayors of the three cities proceeded to Danish King's Garden, where a shot was fired from a replica of the Red Lion, a cannon cast in Tallinn in 1559 the original of which is kept at the Museum of the History of Artillery in St. Petersburg, Russia.


The mayor is scheduled to formally announce the start of Tallinn Day at the Town Hall at noon.
