BC, Tallinn, 09.05.2018.Print version

Several dangerous substances and chemical compounds, including the compound DDT banned in Estonia almost half a century ago, as well as high levels of various pesticides were detected in the water of the river Emajogi in a recent survey, the Estonian Environment Agency said, cites LETA.

According to a report drawn up at the Environment Agency, the content of dangerous compounds in Emajogi is causing concern, spokespeople for the agency told BNS on Tuesday.

The survey revealed record levels of various pesticides in excess of valid norms in the water of the river.

The findings include the insecticide DDT banned in Estonia since the start of the 1970s, increased content of agricultural nutrients downstream, and residues of painkillers and hormonal medicines. Even though the impact from these substances on the aquatic resources is not tangible yet, measures have to be taken promptly to prevent the worst, the agency said.

The survey points out that residents and businesses of Tartu and its environs bear special responsibility for the water quality and the preservation of the ecosystems of Emajogi river, the aquatic artery of East Estonia.
