Siil, Saber Strike largest military exercises to be held in Estonia in 2018

The Siil military exercise to be held in May and the Saber Strike exercise to be held in June will be the largest military trainings in terms of the number of participants that will be organized in Estonia this year.


More than 13,000 uniformed people are take part in Siil, therefore this year's exercise will be the largest military exercise since Estonia restored its independence in 1991. More than 2,000 members of the defense forces are to take part in the Saber Strike exercise to be held on the Estonian territory in June.


Troops of the Kuperjanov infantry battalion of the Estonian  defense forces along with allies from the NATO battle group stationed at Tapa this week are to practice carrying out defense battles during the exercise Kuldlabidas (Golden Spade).


The Estonian Navy is planning to include nearly 800 participants in this year's Open Spirit, the biggest annual mine countermeasures exercise of the Baltic countries which will take place in Estonia this year. The Estonian Navy is to also participate in the Baltops exercise to be held in Polish waters in June.


Larger exercises to be held in Estonia this year also include the Furious Oak exercise in August and the EST-NDL-eFP pioneer training to be held from September to October. The air force is to carry out the exercise Baltic Bikini in Estonia in August.


The Estonian defense forces this year will also take part in the exercises Furious Hammer, Saber Knight and Furious Axe to be held in Latvia in April, May and October, respectively. The defense forces in October will also participate in the Baltic Shield exercise to be held in Finland and the Iron Wolf exercise to be held in Lithuania in November.
