Divers take Estonian flag to depth of 100 meters in Red Sea

BC, Tallinn, 23.02.2018.Print version

Divers of the Maremark diving club took an Estonian flag to a depth of 100 meters in the Red Sea as part of the events of the week of the centennial of the Republic of Estonia.

"One hundred meters is two times the Tall Hermann tower with flag," said Alo Toom, instructor at Meremark.

"While there are thousands of diving enthusiast in Estonia, only a couple of dozen could go to a depth of 100 meters. This requires special training, meticulous planning, correctly prepared gases and faultless observance of the plan, because safety is paramount," Toom said, adding that the usual limit for hobbyists was 40 meters.

"You have to plan at least 100 minutes for safe ascent from 100 meters. Since you can't chat with your buddies when submerged and must spend the time in absolute silence, this offered a good opportunity to think about one year in Estonia's history in each of the 100 minutes," another instructor, Janek Press, said.

The team that participated in the venture sponsored by Avis Eesti was made up of divers Alo Toom, Janek Press, Hardi Isok and Tanel Linnas. The diving took place off the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Dahab on Sinai's east coast.

Maremark is the biggest diving club in Estonia, bringing together both hobbyists and technical divers.
