The University of Tartu has informed that the man who died in hospital after collapsing during the Tartu Maraton ski marathon on Sunday was Rein Ahas, professor of human geography at the university, Tartu Postimees reported, cites LETA/BNS.

Ahas, 51, collapsed after suffering a health problem in the 34.5th kilometer of the marathon. Attempts to resuscitate the marathon participant were begun right away and he was hospitalized in critical condition. Medics at Tartu University Hospital were umnable to save his live.

Ahas' doctoral thesis, defended in 1999, was titled Spatial and Temporal Variability of Phenological Phases in Estonia. Ahas was head of the chair of human geography and regional planning at the University of Tartu since 2006 and he has also worked as visiting professor in Oxford and at universities in the United States, Austria, Sweden, Belgium and Finland.
