Authorities ready to evacuate residents at Jekabpils in case of flood
Latvia), the Combined Civil Defense Commission's secretary Andris Stolcers told LETA.
"Vehicles necessary for evacuating residents from the flooded
territories are in working order, and these people will be, if necessary,
provided lodgings in the local school gyms," said Stolcers.
The authorities are following the developments in the area and changes in
the water level in the River Daugava. If necessary, the Civil Defense
Commission is ready to hold a meeting within 30 minutes to discuss action in
the case of flood.
Sala Region Council's Executive Director Arnis Baumeisers also told LETA
that his municipality was ready for action if need be. Sala Region may be hit
the hardest if the water level keeps raising down the river from Jekabpils.
All the equipment is in working condition, people have been advised on what
they should do in the event of flood, said Baumeisters, adding though that no
one in the flooded areas had sought the local government's help during the past
several years.
According to Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center, water
level in the Daugava in Jekabpils is 6.6 meters above the norm - higher than
the maximum levels registered during the 2013 and 2017 spring floods.
A section of Plavinu Street was flooded in Jekabpils yesterday, but the
authorities drained the water to normalize the situation.
