Unity faction in Riga suggests naming street after Nemtsov
The Unity party's faction in the Riga City Council has suggested that a
street in the Latvian capital should be named after the slain Russian
opposition leader, Boris Nemtsov,
informs LETA.
Vilnis Kirsis, the chairman of the Unity faction, said in the letter to
Riga Mayor Nils Usakovs (Harmony) that on February 27 it will be three years
since Nemtsov was assassinated in Moscow.
Nemtsov was against the aggressive Russian foreign policy in respect of its
neighbors, in particular the Baltic states, Kirsis said.
In appreciation of Nemtsov's personal contribution to building a democratic
opposition and promotion of democracy, freedom of speech and other human
rights, the Riga City Council should name a street or a square after Nemtsov,
Kirsis suggested.
This January, local authorities in the U.S. capital of Washington have
decided to rename a square in front of the Russian Embassy in honor of the
murdered opposition politician Boris Nemtsov.
Nemtsov was gunned down on February 27, 2015, while crossing a bridge
overlooking the Kremlin. Supporters of the opposition politician say that the
masterminds behind his assassination have not been brought to justice, although
five Chechens were convicted of the murder, and that Nemtsov had been killed on
the orders from Russian President Vladimir Putin.
