The Latvian Skating Association has given 17-year-old Diana Nikitina a spot on the Latvian figure skating team for the upcoming Winter Olympics in South Korea, LETA was informed by LSA general-secretary Arta Strautmane.

This despite the fact that 19-year-old Angelina Kucvalska was the one who earned Latvia a place in the Olympics with a 22nd place finish at this year's World Championships.

Kucvalska has been battling injuries this season, and has not had good performances recently, while Nikitina has made her debut in senior competitions quite successfully and has been having a good season so far, which is why she was chosen to represent Latvia in South Korea.

However, Kucvalska has been included on the Olympic delegation as a reserve.

Meanwhile, Deniss Vasiljevs will be representing Latvia in the men's figure skating competition.

Latvia has not been represented at the Olympic figure skating competitions since 1994.
