Latvia's FIBA World Cup qualification roster announced
The head coach of the
Latvian national men's basketball team Arnis Vecvagars has released the roster
which will be competing in November's qualification matches for the 2019 FIBA
Basketball World Cup, informs LETA.
Vecvagars has also
included Rodions Kurucs, who plays for Barcelona in the ACB League and is
expected to be drafted in next year's NBA Draft.
Arturs Ausejs, who was
one of the last players cut on the national team ahead of this year's
EuroBasket, will also make his debut on the national team.
Five other
participants of Eurobasket 2017, where Latvia finished in overall fifth place,
have also been included on the roster - Janis Blums, Aigars Skele, Zanis
Peiners, Andrejs Grazulis and Rolands Smits.
Other players who have
previously played on the national team include Rolands Freimanis, Mareks
Mejeris, Anzejs Pasecniks, Ojars Silins and Ingus Jakovics.
Due to the conflict
between ULEB and FIBA, several of Latvia's potential leaders will not suit up
for Latvia - Janis Timma, Janis Strelnieks, Martins Meiers and Dairis Bertans.
Latvia's two NBA
players Kristaps Porzingis and Davis Bertans will also not be suiting up for
Latvia due to the fact that the NBA season is ongoing.
The Latvian team will
gather for its first practice on Monday.
Latvia will play its
first qualifier on November 24 at Turkey, and on November 26 at home against
Sweden.
