Latvian graphic artist Katrina Cemme wins Baltic Young Artist Award
Latvian graphic artist and sculptor Katrina
Cemme has won the Baltic Young Artist Award and a monetary prize of EUR
2,000, Elina Vikmane, a
representative of the of the Latvian Museum of Contemporary Art Foundation,
told LETA.
Lithuanian artist Laura Motiejunaite
won the public vote and a EUR 500 prize, and Latvian artist Lauma Kokorevica was voted winner in a
poll on Latvia’s public media website lsm.lv. Vikmane noted that more than
3,000 people took part in the online poll this year, or 20 percent more than
last year.
Cemme, 28, has studied at the Graphic Art Department of the Art Academy of
Latvia and the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. This year she received a master’s
degree from the Visual Communication Department of the Art Academy of Latvia.
The artist creates graphical art and sculptural objects using materials with
unique properties. She takes part in exhibitions since 2012.
The art competition’s international jury included art professionals from
five countries.
The Baltic Young Artist Award ceremony took place at the Art Museum Riga
Bourse on Wednesday.
The Baltic Young Artist Award has been established by the Latvian Museum of
Contemporary Art Foundation, which in turn has been founded jointly by the ABLV
Charitable Foundation in cooperation and the Inara and Boris Teterev
Foundation.
In all, 75 young artists who had studied at one of the Baltic countries’
art academies competed for the Baltic Young Artist Award in this year’s
competition.
