Latvian basketball champions VEF Riga were defeated by Russia's Nizhny Novgorod 64:80 (20:15, 16:19, 12:20, 16:26) in a VTB United League match on Sunday, writes LETA.

The Latvians were leading 36:34 after the first half, but, much like in the season's opening match, their game fell apart in the second half, when Nizhny Novgorod outscored the Riga club by 18 points.

Mareks Mejeris was the highest scorer for VEF with 15 points and five rebounds, while Antwan Scott had ten points and Arnas Labuckas nine. Stevan Jelovac led Nizhny Novgorod with 16 points.

As reported, last season VEF Riga finished in seventh place in the VTB League's standings.
