Ventspils open new FIBA Champions League season with win
In the opening group match of this season's FIBA Champions League last
night, Latvian basketball club Ventspils defeated defending league champs
Tenerife Iberostar (Spain) 73:72, informs LETA.
Ronalds Zakis scored the winning basket for the Latvian club with seven
second left in the match.
Zakis also led the scoring for Ventspils with 14 points and eight rebounds,
followed by Maris Gulbis with 13 points and Julius Jucikas with 12 points.
Mike Tobey led the way for the Spanish club with 20 points.
Ventspils and Iberostar are in Group B in this year's Champions League
tournament together with Lithuanian basketball club Klaipeda Neptunas, Turkish
club Gaziantep, French club Chalon Elan, German club Ludwigsburg MHP Riesen and
Italian club Capo d'Orlando SikeliArchivi.
The top four teams in the group will advance to the tournament's knockout
stage, while teams placed fifth and sixth will qualify for the FIBA Eurocup's
knockout stage.
Last season, Ventspils advanced to the knockout stage, but did not make it
past the first-round.
