4 children in severe condition after fire on catamaran in Riga

Four children who sustained injuries in a fire on a catamaran in Riga are in a severe condition, informs LETA.


Children’s Clinical University Hospital representative Vita Steina said that the four children have been hospitalized, they are in a severe, but stable condition.


Two other children have lighter injuries and one of them will be able to leave the hospital today. Even though there were initial reports about seven children on the vessel, the hospital has information about six injured children.


As reported, 12 people, including children, sustained injuries in an accident on a catamaran in Riga that struck high-voltage electric cables and caught fire. All people were rescued, but sustained serious burns and were hospitalized. The catamaran sunk.


The accident happened next to Hapaks ditch and yacht port, 200 meters away from the bank.


Vladimirs Kulesovs, the council chairman of Latvijas Jahta yacht club, told LETA that catamaran Zingarella had ignored the warning signs on the bank of the Hapaks ditch.


He said that the catamaran belong to the yacht club, and there was a private event on it with participation of the captain and his family members.
