Former world cycling champion Vainsteins becomes head coach of Latvian national bicycle road racing team

Former world cycling champion Romans Vainsteins has become the head coach of the Latvian national bicycle road racing team, as Latvian Cycling Federation informed LETA.


All members of the Cycling Federation's council voted for appointing Vainsteins the head of the national team today. He will be the head coach of the men's national team as well as participate in coaching the U23, junior, youth, and women's national teams. At the same time, Vainsteins will also work as the manager of Latvian national road bicycle racing teams.


Vainsteins won the Road World Championships in 2000, becoming one of the world's leading road bicycle racers.


Vainsteins retired from professional sports in 2004 and went on to start a business in Italy. Last year he moved back to Latvia.


The Cycling Federation's council today also approved Toms Flaksis, the coach of Rietumu Banka Riga team, as the coach of the U-23 men's team, while Murjanis Sports School coach Janis Veide will be the coach of the junior team.


Martins Trautmanis will be the coach of the Latvian youth team and Raivis Belohvosciks, who finished fourth at the 199 Road World Championships, will coach the women's national team.
