New Guinness world record set by lighting Christmas tree in Riga City Hall Square

A new Guinness world record was set in Riga today as the world’s biggest Rube Goldberg chain was used to light the Christmas tree in City Hall Square, Kristine Rasnaca, a representative of the event’s organizers, told LETA.


"The record has been successfully beaten, the 412 links were counted," Rasnaca said, adding that Seida Tsubaki-Gemiki, a representative of the Guinness World Records from Germany who witnessed the chain reaction, officially confirmed the new record.


Rasnaca indicated that this was one of most difficult world records to set, as it took one and a half months of meticulous work on each link of the chain and also luck.


Until now, the record was held by a Rube Goldberg chain built in Hungary and comprising 383 links.


Riga’s Rube Goldberg chain has been constructed by Scandinweb company. The chain reaction that Riga mayor Nils Usakovs set off at the City Hall which ended in the square by lighting the Christmas tree.
