Riga Zoo hopes to receive three lions from South Africa
Riga Zoo expects to receive a male lion and two female lions from South Africa as part of an international program, representatives of the Riga City Council informed.
Today, Riga Zoo marked its 104th anniversary by unveiling a renovated lion enclosure. The central role in the celebrations was given to Asian lioness Tori which made her first entrance into the renovated open air enclosure.
The renovated lion enclosure is part of the zoo’s African Savanah project, which is scheduled for completion by Latvia’s centenary in 2018.
Riga Zoo chairman Rolands Greizins said that the lion’s house has undergone its fourth makeover already. Tori, which was brought to Riga from Tallinn on October 7, is currently its only inhabitant, but Riga Zoo is taking part in an international program to obtain African lions, a male and two female lions, which most probably will be delivered from South Africa.
