Estonia to improve protection against terrorism of hundreds of objects

BC, Tallinn, 21.09.2016.Print version

Estonia is to add state institutions, the Estonian National Museum as well as some bridges, server rooms and emergency generators of hospitals and hundreds more buildings on the new list of objects important for national defense which will have the obligation to enhance their defense against a possible attack, according to the daily Postimees reports writes LETA/BNS.

The plan which is currently being implemented by the Interior Ministry means a reform of protecting Estonia's infrastructure. If the government approves the regulation on Thursday, the old list of objects under great risk of being attacked would be replaced with the new list. The latter would include a much bigger number of objects, from the Stenbock House to blood establishments.

The new list has six security categories and the final list of objects will not be made public.

The deputy secretary general for interior security policy at the Interior Ministry, Erkki Koort, does not hide that the new requirements have been motivated by the Ukrainian crisis and terrorist attacks in Central Europe.

He said that in Ukraine the takeover of state institutions took place very easily. "Since the doors were basically open there, they just walked in. We want to avoid a group just taking over Estonia's objects important for the functioning of the state and the society," Koort said.

According to the Interior Ministry the new regulations will result in increased costs, but not by much. Some institutions might have to move.
