Riga Dinamo opens new KHL season with loss to Sochi

club Riga Dinamo opened the 2016/2017
Kontinental Ice Hockey League (KHL) season on Tuesday with a 1:3 loss to
Russian ice hockey club Sochi.
Colton Gillies scored
the lone goal for the Latvian club, with Ilya
Krikunov scoring two goals for Sochi and Igor Ignatushkin adding another.
The
Russian club scored all three of its goals in the first period, with Gillies
scoring the first goal of the season for Dinamo in the second period.
Dinamo
will play its next regular season match on Thursday at Russian ice hockey club
Nizhny Novgorod Torpedo.
Last
season, Dinamo finished in overall 12th place in the Western Conference
standings, failing to qualify for the KHL playoffs for the second season in a
row.
A total
of 29 team from eight countries will be playing in the KHL this season -
Russia, Latvia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Finland, Slovakia, Croatia and China.
The
KHL's regular season will conclude on February 18.
