Tallinn's iconic Russalka monument gets EUR 20,000 facelift

BC, Tallinn, 26.07.2016.Print version

The Russalka monument, a landmark of the Estonian capital overlooking the Bay of Tallinn, got during June and July a facelift for which the government of Tallinn's Central borough had earmarked 20,000 euros.

In the course of the works the bronze statue of an angel atop the monument and its base and pedestal were cleaned and the gilding on the plaques was refreshed.

While the work was in progress the heritage conservation department of the city government also took a good look at the monument's structural condition. The studies showed the memorial to be in a good condition for its age.

The monument was erected in 1902 in memory of the 177 crew of the Russian warship Rusalka (Mermaid) that sank in a storm in the Gulf of Finland after sailing from Tallinn in September 1893. The statue of the angel was sculpted by one of Estonia's most famous sculptors, Amandus Adamson.
