Four people died and three others were injured after inhaling poisonous gas on a farm in the central Latvian district of Jaunberze today, the district’s administrator Raimonds Sipols told LETA.

Dairis Anucins, a spokesman for the State Police, said that information had been received from Jaunberze in Dobele Region that poisonous gas had leaked from a container during renovation works on a farm and that the vapors had killed four people, while three others were taken to hospital.

According to provisional information, the gas leak occurred in a closed room during renovation works. The leak is being blamed on a technical error which happened while manor was being pumped from the farm’s premises into containers.

The three people who were in the room when the gas leaked from the container died and three others suffered gas poisoning after inhaling the poisonous vapors.

A criminal probe has been launched to established the exact causes of the accident.

Police, rescuers and medics are currently working at the scene of the accident.
