The State Fire and Rescue Service in Latvia will turn on the civil defense sirens throughout Latvia at 10 a.m. on Thursday for testing purposes, the service's Press Department announced LETA.

A total of 164 sirens will be blaring across the country for three minutes during the test on Thursday to make sure the alarm system was functional.

Residents need not be worried and no further action is required. The State Fire and Rescue Service urges hotel administrators to inform foreign guests about the upcoming alarm test.

The civil defense sirens are meant for a fast warning of residents about emergency situations, such as natural disasters, technogenic disasters that already take place or are approaching.

According to the regulations issued by the Latvian Cabinet of Ministers, the civil defense sirens have to be tested twice a year.
