Like in previous years, thousands of people attend events of the annual Night of Museums in Latvia on Saturday night.

Janis Garjanis, the head of the Department of Museums at the Culture Ministry, told LETA that the ministry would release a rough attendance figure on Monday but that it was already clear that the events were very well attended this year.

"The Night of Museums has taken place and it was a success," Gajanis said.

The Art Museum Riga Bourse received 16,393 visitors and 11,875 people visited the Latvian National Museum of Art, according to information posted on Twitter by the Latvian National Museum of Art.

Also, 6,295 people visited the Arsenal art gallery and 6,543 visitors were recorded at the Latvian Museum of Decorative Arts and Design.

Some 3,000 people seized the opportunity to visit the Saeima house, which also opened its doors to the public on the Night of Museums, the Saeima Press Office informed.

Representatives of the Culture Ministry have not yet released their attendance statistics following this year’s Night of Museums.

As reported, about 150 museums and other institutions linked to Latvia’s cultural heritage, including 44 in Riga, opened their doors to the public at 7 p.m. on Saturday to remain open well into night as Latvia held the Night of Museums for the 12th year already.

The number of museums participating in this year’s Night of Museums was the highest ever recorded in Latvia. Their number had increased from 54 museums that participated in the 2005 events.

The theme of this year’s Night of Museums was “Doors”.
