MFA, embassies and the EU Commission Representation in Riga open their doors for "Europe Day"

To mark "Europe Day", the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) together with the foreign embassies welcomes people to participate in the traditional Open Doors Day on 9 May from 13.30 to 16.30, informs LETA.

 

You are cordially invited to the following events organised by the Foreign Ministry.

 

- At 13.30, in the lobby of the Foreign Ministry building, visitors will be greeted with a musical performance offered by the recently established Latvian Diplomatic Choir under the guidance of conductor Jānis Ozols.

 

- From 13.35 to 16.40, there will be interactive discussions on the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the EU and challenges that the EU is facing. The discussions will be opened by Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica, Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Speaking in the first session, dealing with the EU Neighbourhood, are Dr. Tatjana Muravska, a professor at the University of Latvia; Ambassador Marģers Krams, Head of the Foreign Ministry's Bilateral Relations Directorate; and Juris Poikāns, Latvia's Ambassador to Ukraine. The debate (in English) will be moderated by Māris Cepurītis, a researcher from the Centrefor East European Policy Studies.

 

- From 14.45 to 15.00, all interested will have an opportunity to test the extent of their knowledge with a quiz on the European Union in Latvian or English.

- From 15.00 to 16.30, visitors are invited to take part in the second discussion on issues of current importance for Latvia in the EU context and put their questions to Kristīne Našeniece, Director of the Foreign Ministry's EU Coordination and Policies Department, and Kaspars Krumholcs, head of the COREPER I Division. The discussion will be held in Latvian.

- The visitors will have a unique opportunity to see certified copies of the principal agreements on Latvia's accession to the European Union:

 

1) The Agreement on free trade and trade-related matters between the European Community, the European Atomic Energy Community and the European Coal and Steel Community, of the one part, and the Republic of Latvia, of the other part;

2) The Europe Agreement establishing an association between the European Communities and their Member States, of the one part, and the Republic of Latvia, of the other part;

3) The Treaty on Latvia's accession to the European Union.

Separate documents and photographs will illustrate the milestones on Latvia's path to the EU.


- Thevisitorswill have the opportunity to watch a video entitled "Kristaps and the EU: Euroclubs and Participation" (Kristaps un ES: eiroklubi un līdzdalība) and to look at drawings by children from Šķibe Primary School that are on display; the drawings show what the children wish for the EU and what they expect from it.

 

Also opening their doors to visitors are a number of foreign embassies in Riga: the Embassy of Denmark, the Embassy of Estonia, the Embassy of Finland, the Embassy of Georgia, the Embassy of Germany, the Embassy of Italy, the Embassy of Ireland, the Embassy of Moldova, the Embassy of the Netherlands, the Embassy of Poland, the Embassy of Slovakia, the Embassy of Ukraine and the Embassy of Sweden.

 

Europe Day is organised in cooperation with the European Commission Representation and the European Parliament Information Office in Latvia.

 

Please be ready to show your photo ID upon arrival at the Foreign Ministry.
