BC, Riga, 10.02.2016.Print version

The Latvian team have won the main prize of the International Snow Sculpture Contest at the 67th Sapporo Snow Festival in Japan, LETA was told at the Latvian Foreign Ministry.

Latvian artists Karlis Ile, Maija Puncule and Mintauts Buskevics won the prize the competition of 12 teams from across the world.

The Bridge, the sculpture created by the Latvian team, connects two worlds, the male and the female, with each of them being seemingly self-sufficient, although in fact representing only one half of something bigger and more complete. They can only exist together. The shape of the sculpture is laconic, stressing the purity of form and thought, the ministry said.

This was the first time that the Latvian artists were invited to the Sapporo festival whose organizers had appreciated their achievements in several other similar contests in recent years.

More than 200 snow and ice sculptures were put on display at the Sapporo Snow Festival, which had invited sculptors from around the world to take part in the show sculpture contest. It is estimated that the event, which took place from February 4 to 8, drew more than two million visitors this year.
