On Wednesday, Latvia's second ranked female tennis player Anastasija Sevastova lost to Greece's Maria Sakkari 2-6, 6-7 in the first qualification round of this year's U.S. Open ''Grand Slam'' tennis tournament, cites LETA.

At the moment, Sevastova is ranked 144th in the WTA rankings, while Sakkari is ranked 206th.

Meanwhile, Latvia's top-ranked female tennis player Alona Ostapenko won her opening U.S. Open ''Grand Slam'' qualifier earlier this week, will take on Israel's Julia Glushko in the second qualification round today.

In order to qualify for the main tournament, Ostapenko needs to overcome three qualification rounds.

As reported, Sevastova announced her retirement from professional tennis in May of 2013, while she was just 23-years-old. At the time, Sevastova said that her decision came due to the various ailments and injuries that have plagued her the past three years.

At her pinnacle, Sevastova was ranked 36th in the world, but was ranked 148th when she announced her retirement.

Since coming out of retirement earlier this year, Sevastova has gradually been moving up in the WTA rankings.
