Commemorating the 76th anniversary of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact and the 26th anniversary of the Baltic Way, President Dalia Grybauskaite urged Lithuanians to show solidarity and value freedom, reports LETA/ELTA.

"This day is a painful memory, but it also offers hope and resolve. We will never forget that 76 years ago we were an object of the despicable Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. We were enslaved for a long time, but the desire of freedom remained unbroken. Therefore, today we are proud that 26 years ago we took part in the Baltic Way – an outburst of national liberation. We also remember the exceptional bravery of our dissidents – it was them who 28 years ago on this day by the monument to Adomas Mickevicius publicly condemned the brutal secret protocol of the pact.

We remember the participants of freedom fights, partisans and exiles, whose sacrifice obliges us to develop, protect and strengthen the foundations of our country. At the Baltic Way we showed that we can be free and overcome the seemingly insurmountable difficulties. Thus let us be free today and know how to appreciate our freedom. Let us show solidarity and be united," said Grybauskaite.
