Estonian athletes attend European Maccabi Games

With the support of the Estonian Culture Ministry, 19 Estonian-Jewish Maccabi sports club competitors participate in Europe's biggest traditional Jewish sports games European Maccabi Games at the Berlin Olympic Stadium till August 5, Estonian Culture Ministry announced BC.

 

The international sporting event, which takes place for the first time in the stadium, where Jewish athletes could not participate in the Olympic Games held in Berlin in 1936, sends a message to the whole world about tolerance and anti-Semitism.

 

The 14th European Maccabi Games have this year about 2,400 athletes from 37 countries competing. The festive opening was on Tuesday.

 

"Estonia being represented at the 14 international European Maccabi Games is very important. We have gladly supported the sports club Maccabi participating in this event, and we wish wholeheartedly success for the competitions," said sports Undersecretary of the Ministry of Culture Sports Tõnu Seil.

 

Estonia is represented at the games with 5 tennis players, a chess player, a badminton player and 12 indoors football players. Estonian-Jewish Maccabi Sports Society participated in the Maccabi Games in 1935, before the Second World War. After a long hiatus, Estonia was represented in the games again in 2007 in Rome, where they brought home three gold medals. Four years later, in Vienna, the Estonian Maccabi team won 7 medals, both silver and bronze medals.
