One of Latvia's best female tennis players Anastasija Sevastova defeated Veronica Cepede Royg (Paraguay) 7-6 (7:4), 4-6, 6-4 in the second round of the Brazilian Tennis Cup last night, informs LETA.

The match continued for more than two-and-a-half hours. Sevastova is currently ranked 188th in the WTA rankings, whereas Cepede Royg is in 150th place.

This is the first time since the summer of 2010 that Sevastova reaches the quarterfinals of a WTA tournament. Sevastova has already earned 60 WTA ranking points at the Brasilian Tennis Cup.

In her quarterfinal match, Sevastova will play Maria Teresa Torro Flor (157th in WTA rankings). The match will be today at 5 p.m.

As reported, Sevastova defeated American Louisa Chirico 6-1, 6-4 in the first round of the tournament.

Sevastova announced her retirement from professional tennis in May of 2013, while she was just 23-years-old. At the time, Sevastova said that her decision came due to the various ailments and injuries that have plagued her the past three years.

At her pinnacle, Sevastova was ranked 36th in the world. Since coming out of retirement earlier this year, Sevastova has gradually been moving up in the WTA rankings.
