BC, Riga, 24.07.2015.Print version

The multiple award-winning Riga youth choir "Kamer..." departs for Manila, the capital of Philippines, where they start their Asian tour, Kristine Zvirbule, choir's managing director, informed LETA.

The choir will be performing in Philippines, Taiwan and China, and participate in three festivals and master classes, introducing audiences to Latvian and Baltic choral music.

As the conductor Janis Liepins believes, Asia is very active in the field of choral music, their choirs regularly participate and win a lot of international competitions in Europe, and organize many international festivals. "Latvia, with our long tradition in choir singing, can be proud of our achievements and we are envied internationally. We are very excited and honored to be invited to present Baltic choir culture at these amazing festivals. This is a great opportunity to enrich our knowledge in Asian culture of choral music as well," says Liepins, emphasizing, that the main reason is to introduce wider audiences to the beautiful music from our region.

"Kamer..." last visited Asia almost a decade ago in 2006, when they won the "World Choir Games" in Xiamen, China.

They will sing songs from Baltic composers Eriks Esenvalds, Peteris Vasks, Arvo Pärt, Veljo Tormis, Vytautas Miskinis, Peteris Plakidis and others, as well as Latvian folk songs from the project "Amber songs" where composers from different countries introduced their arrangements.

On the first leg of the tour in Phillippines, the choir will participate in "Andrea O. Veneracion International Choir Festival" where conductor Liepins is one of the jury members. "Kamer..." will present a two-part concert in the most important concert hall in Philippines – "Cultural Center of the Philippines".

After Philippines, "Kamer..." is visiting Taiwan where they are invited as special guests in the "Taipei International Choir Festival". They will give three important concerts and masterclasses in Taipei, Taichung, and Chiayi.

At the end of the tour, choir will visit Beijing, the capital of China, and perform in the "National Center for the Performing Arts" during the "August Choir Festival", giving a two part concert.

Financial support is provided by Riga City Council, Ministry of Culture, as well as philanthropists and donators.
