On May 26, at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Latvia to the United Nations in New York, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Edgars Rinkevics, presented the Latvian Foreign Ministry’s Certificate of Commendation to the diplomat, Uldis Blukis, for his contributions to the strengthening of Latvia’s statehood, reports BC the Latvian MFA.

When presenting the Certificate of Commendation, Edgars Rinkevics expressed gratitude to Uldis Blukis for his work on behalf of Latvia and his active engagement in, and assistance to Latvia’s Foreign Service from the time of its renewal.

Uldis Blukis is one the founders of the Baltic Appeal to the United Nations, and an active contributor and supporter. From 1991 to 1998, he served as a diplomat at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Latvia to the United Nations, and from 1994 to 2000, as an expert at the United Nations Committee on Contributions. Earlier, he applied his professional experience and knowledge of the activities and structures of the UN while working as a volunteer at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Latvia to the United Nations.

A significant acquisition for the Archives of the Foreign Ministry are the documents that Uldis Blukis collected, preserved and then gave to the Foreign Ministry in 2014 – official memoranda, reports and personal notes documenting Latvia’s accession to the UN, the activities of the Permanent Mission of Latvia to the United Nations, as well as the work of the United Nation General Assembly’s Committee on Contributions. These documents substantially enrich the archive’s collection of materials from 1990s, which was an important period in the history of Latvia and the Latvian Foreign Service.
