Salvation Army UK choir to bring music to Latvia

BC, Riga, 19.05.2015.Print version

The Salvation Army in Latvia are pleased to announce the visit of a Salvation Army choir from the United Kingdom, Staines Songster Brigade. The visit coincides with the international celebration of 150 years since The Salvation Army, now active in 126 countries, first began its work amongst the poor.

As well as being renowned for its practical Christianity and ministry to the marginalised in society, The Salvation Army has developed, in many parts of the world, a strong musical tradition with many choirs and brass bands performing to the highest standards. Staines Songsters is one such choir, a vibrant group of over 50 members representing a wide range of ages and professions. The members sing a varied repertoire ranging from traditional sacred songs to contemporary Gospel.

Over many years Staines Songsters has maintained an excellent standard of choral singing and has performed on BBC Television in ‘Songs of Praise’, and on BBC national radio, as well as in the Royal Albert Hall, a major arts venue in London.

The choir is active in its local community in the UK. As a church choir they contribute to worship on Sunday each week at The Salvation Army church in Staines, which is west of London near Heathrow Airport. The sounds of their music can often be heard in homes for the elderly, local hospitals, shopping centres, as well as in regular Saturday evening concerts. They say that they will ‘....sing, sing, sing, wherever they can, to bring the gospel message to life.’

During their visit to Latvia, Staines Songsters will be performing outdoors at Origo on Friday 29th May at 15.00 pm and later on the same day at the new theatre at the Music School in Saldus at 19.00 pm. On Saturday 30th May they will be performing at 19.00 pm at St Peter’s Church, in the Old City, Riga. All these concerts are free and all are welcome to attend.

On Sunday they will be taking part in worship at Bauska at 11.00 am and at Liepa at 11.00 am. These are all public meetings and everyone is invited.
