Over 70 events across Latvia to mark May 4 Restoration of Independence Day

The May 4, 1990 Restoration of Independence Day will be marked by more than seventy various events held across Latvia this year, as the State Chancellery's Communications Department informed LETA.

 

The events will be targeted at all ages and embrace as many activities as possible. There will be official ceremonies, concerts, outdoor sports activities, exhibitions, and much more.

 

In Riga, visits to the Riga Radio and Television Tower will be free of charge on May 4, and a number of concerts are planned. In Rezekne, the Friendship Bicycle Ride will be held, a National Armed Forces parade will be held in Jelgava, and the popular 1990s rock band "Jumprava" will appear in Jekabpils.

 

The Restoration of Independence Day will also be celebrated at Latvian embassies abroad. For instance, there will be a traditional Latvian dance night in Luxembourg, a history discussion in Japan, and a piano recital by Vestards Simkus in the United Arab Emirates.

25 years ago, on May 4, 1990, the Supreme Council of the Soviet Latvia passed the declaration "On the Restoration of Independence of the Republic of Latvia", re-instituting the Constitution of Latvia of 1922. Latvia had been part of the Soviet Union for five decades.
