BC, Riga, 17.04.2015.Print version

"Adazi" protected landscape, the majority of which is occupied by the Adazi military training area, has been nominated for the final round of the European nature conservation competition "Natura 2000 Award", the Defense Ministry informed LETA.

Following regular logging, mowing, and other activities from 2010 to 2014, the State Center for Defense Military Sites and Procurement, in collaboration with the National Armed Forces, restored and has been managing 1,030 hectares of heathland. This allows many rare animal and plant species to live in the area – European roller, black grouse, tawny pipit, natterjack, and spreading pasqueflower.

A total of 23 finalists are competing for the "Natura 2000 Award" this year. They were picked from 90 applicants from Great Britain, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Hungary, and Germany. The aim of the competition is to evaluate the achievements in nature conservation of the European Union member states.

The winners will be announced on May 21.
