BC, Riga, 30.03.2015.Print version

The Latvian national football team valiantly clung to a 1:0 lead late into the second half, but the Czech Republic's Vaclav Pilaz found the goal with just a minute to go in regulation, making it 1:1. In extra time, the home team pressed hard, but goalkeeper Andris Vanins stood his ground, reports LETA.

Latvia gained one point in the qualification standings for the 2016 European Football Championship (EURO 2016). The team now has three points.

After the game, Head Coach Marians Pahars lauded Latvia's performance against the first-place Czechs (13 points in the standings), mentioning numerous opportunities to pad the lead to 2:0, which would have made victory a greater probability.

Following another games (ICE 3 KAZ 0; NETH 1 TURK 1), the Czech Republic is in first place in the group standings with 13 points, followed by Iceland with 12 points, the Netherlands with seven points, Turkey with five points, Latvia with three points and Kazakhstan with one point.

The top two teams in each of the eight qualification groups will automatically qualify for EURO 2016, while the third place finishes will play in a special play-off stage for the final four spots in the tournament.
