Riga Marathon to be held two days in 2015

The now-traditional Riga Marathon (celebrating its silver anniversary) will last two days in 2015 – Saturday, May 16 and Sunday, May 17, Riga Mayor Nils Usakovs (Harmony) told a press conference on March 23rd, cites LETA.

 

This will be the 25th Riga Marathon, and for eight years it ran under the banner of Nordea. Lattelecom is now the main partner, while Nordea has the title of "strategic partner" and "official bank of the marathon."

 

 

Lattelecom Riga marathon is included in the official event schedule of the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. It is still the first and only marathon in Northern Europe to receive the prestigious International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) "Bronze" label.

 

Usakovs recalled that the first Riga marathon took place in 1991 outside the city of Riga, gradually moving to the capital over the years. "Riga is interested that the marathon be an example of a healthy lifestyle, urging the residents to become physical active," Usakovs said.

 

At the 11th November Embankment, "Rimi" Children's Race will be the key event on May 16. In the afternoon, the marathon's Parade of Nations is scheduled to move through the Old Town of Riga.

 

"The marathon will represent more than 60 countries, featuring a symbolic parade which will move through the Old Town of Riga to the 11th November Embankment – a way to show these countries," says Aigars Nords, CEO of NECom. He added that in the evening, people will be able to enjoy savory snacks at the "Pasta Party".

 

On May 17, the main event – a total of four distances – five, ten, 21, and 32 kilometers. The race will also feature the special "Presidential Kilometer".

 

The 2015 Lattelecom Riga Marathon is set to gather about 25,000 runners, Nords said.

 

The winners will be bestowed with a medal featuring a map of the city and a new logo depicting a running man.
