Lithuania renewed the war against monuments

BC, Vilnius, 26.02.2015.Print version

Lithuania has renewed the war against monuments after 25 years have passed since the restoration of independence. Honorary citizen of Siauliai, art historian Professor Vytenis Rimkus has proposed not to demolish statues but erect them instead and says the destruction of monuments is a sign of political struggle, informs LETA/ELTA, referring to Siauliu krastas.

He questions the limits of the process, "If a bridge was built by the Soviet engineers perhaps it should be demolished as well like a relic of the past?" Currently it is being disputed whether the Soviet statues should be removed from Vilnius Green Bridge. "Time for official removal has been overlooked. Had this been done in the early days of independence everything would have been long forgotten. But now the removal of statues may do more harm. If we touch them, then the statues of Liudvikas Reza and Kristijonas Donelaitis may be demolished in Kaliningrad," said the professor.
