Latvian doctor goes to Kiev to help Ukrainian soldiers for no reward

BC, Riga, 22.01.2015.Print version

Ocularist Valdis Valters went to Ukraine's capital city of Kiev this week to offer help to Ukrainian soldiers – for free, TV3 News reported last night, cites LETA.

Valters says he was unable to sleep at night, realizing the situation Ukrainians were going through. The doctor was worried that "if we do not help them, we could be the next."

Valters arrived in Kiev on Monday, and is planning to devote an entire week to treat Ukrainian soldiers. He is providing soldiers, who have lost an eye in battle, with prosthetic eyes. "In fact, I am a bit tired, as I have not treated so many people before," the oculist told TV3 News.

Events in Ukraine remind Valters of the reawakening period in Latvia. Ukrainians are grateful for the Latvian doctor's involvement, and Valters has already become a star with the local media.

Valters is determined to help 65 patients in Kiev using his own funds. He has already provided 40 soldiers with prosthetic eyes by Wednesday.
