One of Latvia's best-ever women's basketball players, Ieva Kublina, has retired from professional basketball, the athlete confirmed to the magazine ''Sports'', cites LETA.

The 32-year-old power-forward played for Hungarian b-ball club Pecs PEAC last season, but was suffering from knee problems and did not play much.

''My two knee operations have put an end to my career. I had hoped to play for another season, but I have decided against this. I want to be able to walk normally for the remainder of my life,'' Kublina said.

Kublina is currently working as an assistant teacher at the Riga International School.

She recently received an offer to play for Latvian basketball club ''Cesis'', but turned this offer down.

Earlier this year, Kublina was inducted into Virginian Tech University's Hall of Fame, where she played during her college years.

In her professional career, Kublina played on some of the top women's basketball clubs in Hungary, Lithuania, France, Turkey, Russia, the Czech Republic and here in Latvia.

She played for the national women's basketball team from 2003 to 2011, scoring 1,310 points in 122 matches. She played for Latvia at the 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2011 European Women's Basketball Championships, as well as the 2008 Summer Olympics, being one of Latvia's key players in the post throughout her national team career.
