Estonia needs to find 1,000 competent civil servants by 2018

BC, Tallinn, 25.11.2014.Print version

By the year 2018, when Estonia has the Presidency of the European Union, it needs a thousand civil servants who would be able to lead discussions, but according to a survey conducted among officials, finding the staff could be problematic, LETA/Eesti Päevaleht reports.

At the beginning of 2018, Estonia will become the European Union presiding state and for six months, Estonians will lead the work of about 200 EU Council working groups, will prepare processing of 500-700 bills and will organise 1,600-2,000 official meetings.

Also the communication of the Council with the European Parliament has to be coordinated and compromises have to be found to which Germany and Sweden, as well as Greece and Spain would agree to.

Estonia hopes to get all that work done with a thousand civil servants, but according to current estimates, 400-500 of them would be working group leaders or deputy leaders and 20% of the officials connected to the presidency would work in Estonia's representation in Brussels.

However, in the limited budget conditions it is unlikely that there were 1,000 civil servants who would be ready to double their work hours for six months out of enthusiasm.
