Estonian National Museum closes for a year to move to new building

BC, Tallinn, 19.11.2014.Print version

The Estonian National Museum (ENM) closes all collections and permanent exhibitions in the summer of next year, so that employees can focus on packing all assets and moving to the new building in Raadi, near Tartu that should be opened to public in the autumn of 2016, LETA/Postimees writes.

According to the director of the Museum Tõnis Lukas only temporary exhibitions, a café and a shop will stay open.

Lukas said that 112 people work in the museum and they will pack and move all the collections on their own.

The permanent exhibition and collections are scheduled to close from next year's Midsummer's day, but the exact date has not yet been finalized. The more than a year long break affects most pupils and students, i.e. people conducting research and academic studies.

According to the current schedule of ERM hopes to begin moving to the next winter. According to the construction contract, Fund Ehitus should hand over the new ERM headquarters to the National Real Estate Company in December 2015. The building will be handed over to ERM in June 2016 and the museum hopes to open doors to visitors in September or October that year.

The Estonian National Museum was founded in 1909. The museum’s mission is the collecting, preservation, research and presentation of the culture and history of the Estonian people, other Finno-Ugric nations, and minorities in Estonia. The Estonian National Museum is currently located in various buildings in the centre of Tartu. The new building will be erected in Raadi, Tartu. The architectural contest for the new building was completed already in 2006. The controversial project “Memory Field” by Dan Dorell, Lina Ghotmeh and Tsuyoshi Tane was chosen from 108 very deferent projects. The project got stuck since though due to different controversies and lack of financing but finally a cornerstone to the building was laid in May 2013. The assumed total cost of building and furnishing the museum is 63.1 million euros plus VAT.
