Latvia marks Lacplesis Day

BC, Riga, 11.11.2014.Print version

A military parade dedicated to Lacplesis Day will be held by the Freedom Monument in Riga at 1 p.m. today, featuring units from the National Armed Forces and the Interior Ministry's institutions, the Defense Ministry informed LETA.

More than 350 soldiers will participate in the parade, as well as Home Guard and Border Guard members, police officers, and firefighters, commanded by Colonel Egils Lescinskis. The National Armed Forces' Orchestra will also participate in the parade.

The ceremonial changing of the guards of honor will take place before the parade by the Freedom Monument.

The parade will be broadcasted live by Latvian Television.

The Defense Ministry urges people to take part in today's commemorative events and to jointly remember the Latvian War of Independence and the soldiers who lost their lives in the fight for the freedom of Latvia.

In commemorating War Heroes Remembrance Day, also known as Lacplesis Day, Latvians living abroad will have a chance to light a candle at the 11th November Embankment today, the Latvian Institute informed LETA.

For this reason, Latvia's official "Facebook" page "If you like Latvia, Latvia likes you" offers an app called "Light a Candle!". The app offers a chance for users to light candles at the 11th November Embankment by pressing a designated button. An actual candle will be lit near the Riga Castle on November 11, between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m., for each hit made on the app. The candles will be lit by a team of volunteers of "Riga 2014".

Latvia marks Lacplesis Day in memory of the fight for freedom from 1918 to 1920 and its multitude of heroic individuals.
