"12 Years a Slave" director McQueen to receive European Film Academy Award in Riga

The European Film Academy will honor "12 Years a Slave" director Steve McQueen with its award for European achievement in world cinema at the European Film Awards ceremony in Riga, informs LETA.

 

This according to "The Hollywood Reporter".

 

McQueen started out as a video artist making short films, he nabbed international recognition with "Hunger", his debut feature, in 2008. His second feature, "Shame", won a number of international awards in 2011.

 

McQueen's third feature, "12 Years a Slave" was released in 48 countries and won more than 200 awards, among them an Oscar for best motion picture.

 

The European Film Awards ceremony in Riga will be held on December 13, when awards in four categories will be presented, including the people's choice award for best European film.

 

Voting for the people's choice award at the europeanfilmawards.eu website will continue until October 31.

 

The following films have been nominated for the 2014 people's choice award for best European film:

 

"Beauty and the Beast" (director Christophe Gans, France), "Ida" (director Pawel Pawlikowski, Denmark and Poland), "Nymphomaniac" (director Lars von Trier, Denmark), "Philomena" (director Stephen Frears, Britain), "The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared" (director Felix Herngren, Sweden), "Two days, one night" (directors Luc Dardenne and Jean-Pierre Dardenne, Belgium, France and Italy).
