Acclaimed Moscow Gogol Centre presents 2 productions in Riga

BC, Riga, 17.09.2014.Print version

The National Theater of Latvia, from September 17th to September 21, will host two Moscow Gogol Centre plays – Ovid's "Metamorphoses", staged by the Artistic Director of Gogol Centre Kirill Serebrennikov and French director David Bobée, and director Vladislav Natashev's "Medea", Liga Rimsevica, public relations specialist at the National Theatre, informed LETA about the guests from Moscow.

The Serebrennikov/Bobée "Metamorphoses" is a contemporary version of Ovid's ancient myths, however, this is not a story of the 21st century, but from a non-existent period of time, where the souls of the ancient Greek gods and kings dwell. The play is a multimedia production.

A key attraction for "Medea" is that the heroine is portrayed by the Latvian actress Guna Zarina (New Riga Theater).

The layout of the stage is minimal, thus accenting the beauty of Eurypide's text, complemented by children's singing and a solo cello. Only two chairs are seen, and a spotlight, silhouettes of actors, and from the black emptiness – a woman's voice telling her tragic tale.
