Vaccination of wild animals against rabies starts at Estonian border areas

BC, Tallinn, 15.09.2014.Print version

The Estonian Veterinary and Food Board launches on Monday the autumn vaccination campaign of foxes and raccoon dogs in areas near Latvian and Russian borders, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

The vaccine is spread in the 20-40 km area near the Latvian border, 50 km area near the Russian land border and 30 km area near the Narva River, Veterinary and Food Board said.

The vaccine will be spread by throwing special bait that contains vaccine from on board planes to the woods. People are called to keep their pets confined in gardens during the vaccination and for the few following days.

The vaccination lasts till September 25.

The results of the vaccination programme so far have been very good and as the result, in April last year, the Estonian Veterinary and Food Board sent a declaration to the World Animal Health Organisation (OIE) in which it declared Estonia a rabies-free country.
