Latvia marks 20th anniversary since withdrawal of Russian troops

BC, Riga, 29.08.2014.Print version

An event marking the 20th anniversary since the Russian Federation withdrew troops from Latvia will be held at the War Museum today, the Defense Ministry told LETA.

Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma (Unity), Defense Ministry's Parliamentary Secretary Andrejs Pantelejevs (Union of Greens and Farmers) and other high-ranking officials will participate in the event at 2 p.m.

Participants in the event will also be addressed by ex-President Guntis Ulmanis, former Defense Minister and European Parliament member Girts Valdis Kristovskis, former Latvian Ambassador to Russia Janis Peters and others.

On August 31, 1995, Russian officials notified then President Ulmanis that the withdrawal of Russian armed forces from the territory of Latvia was complete.

Only one Russian military facility remained in Latvia – the radio locator station in Skrunda, which was vacated in 1998. Its adjacent recently-built radar was symbolically imploded on May 4, 1995 – an event attracting considerable media and public attention.
